Fluidity - 2023
Description Title
This collection was my final major project at university. The inspiration for my major project came from the ocean and the shapes it creates whilst moving which is why I named it ‘fluidity’. Another reason I chose the name ‘fluidity’ was based on the fact that I do not believe there should be a gender ‘norm’ for the garments I create. My collection features several techniques that I hav been mastering over the three years at university. I began my primary research by heading back to where I had grown up to gather primary images of the ocean and capturing images of the waves crashing against the stairs to give unique lines. I directly used these unique lines within my textiles sampling, especially using machine embroidery
Design Process
My textile techniques are very prominent in my final collection. An example of this would be my short denim jacket, where across the front of the garment you can see digital embroidery, laser cut and frayed denim. In addition I had consistently developed my final design through sampling, such as my pockets and finding the right stitch to use, which can be seen on my pocket experimentation boards below. I ended up using the coverstitch machine, but I preferred the pattern on the back of the stitch, so I had to sew on the wrong side of the garment to create this.
