3D-2D-3D - 2021
Flat to Form
The concept behind this project was to use 3D inspiration for our 2D designs that would then be made into 3D garments. As I wanted a better understanding of this concept, I began by researching designers who had used similar concepts. Shingo Sato stood out due to his unique technique which combines both design and manufacture. To gather more primary research, I began pinning calico to the manikin as well as pleating parts of the calico as I believed this added more depth to my manipulation. This created interesting shapes and features which later inspired my design development.
From Sketch to Garment
Before I began my design development, I printed out my manakin manipulation and drew the key lines back onto these prints to highlight the new shapes I had created. I used these prints to refer back to whilst designing my collection. In addition, I focused on different pleats and what effect these had on my designs. For example, I did not like the box pleats with this collection, unlike knife pleats.
